Mahatma Gandhi Museum in Mangalore

From important roads to elite areas, Mahatma Gandhi’s impact on the city of Mangaluru is unmistakable. Gandhiji visited the city thrice, as it was then the gateway to Kerala and Karnataka. Before his visit, there wasn’t an active freedom movement in the city. Post his visit, after having spoken on social stigmas like untouchables and consumption of alcohol, there was a sudden buzz about the British rule and how to overthrow it.

Mahatma Gandhi Museum in Mangalore

The Mahatma Gandhi museum played a crucial role in galvanizing the freedom struggle in the city. On his visits, Mahatma Gandhi enjoyed enlightening people and participating in various school functions. Once in 1927, Ganghiji inaugurated a portrait of Lokmanya Tilak, a celebrated freedom fighter, in the Canara Public School, Dongerkery. His next visit to the school was in 1934. This visit was accompanied by Gandhiji laying the foundation of the Krishna Mandir.

The school authorities sought his permission (in 1939) to name the museum, which came into existence in 1935, after his name (although Gandhiji was confused as to what purpose it would serve – a humble man indeed!). Presently the museum stands in the school premises and is indeed an honor to the eminent leader of all times, Mahatma Gandhi.
